Two years ago the Economist magazine described a few different examples of innovative health care practices developed in India in an article titled “Lessons from a frugal innovator”. That title would apply today as well an could include even more examples. Few countries can boast of the new ideas that have been or are being tried. Many from this school will be familiar with Aravind Eye Hospitals which have developed an eye care delivery process that is substantially more efficient than that provided in western markets. Other examples can be found in small and large institutions alike. The idea the emphasis on high-quality low-cost health care pervades many conversations. On the small side there is a small facility in southern India called St. Joseph’s Hospice for the Dying and Destitute. Father Thomas pulls people off the street who are left for dead and provides them with comfort and dignity in their last days. About half of the people he brings in thrive and are able to return to their communities and families. On a tour of the facility, Father Thomas will gleefully show you the methods he has developed to produce energy, economize on water and dispose of the deceased bodies without risking desease. All of this is of necessity. On the large side, there are hospitals like Apollo represented on this panel, which have developed large-scale solutions to some of the health care challenges facing India. These challenges have not gone unnoticed by the multinational corporations of the world and many have begun to develop products or service models designed to tap into that. One example of that is J&J, also represented on this panel. J&J has piloted a service arrangement targeting a large and growing population in India: diabetes patients. However, it would be naïve to suggest that the India was an island in the area of health care innovations. Instead, while some of India’s approaches are informing health care delivery in other parts of the world, the reverse is true as well: many of the innovations that have taken place and are taking place in India build on ideas that have at least partly been developed elsewhere. In today’s global economy, news about successful experiences travel fast.

Welcome to the 2011 IBC blog on behalf of everyone on this year’s organizing committee. We’ve been quite busy organizing the 3rd India Business Conference at the Ross School of Business, but wanted to take a moment to touch base with everyone to provide a sense of how far we’ve come and where we’re looking to go. As you can see, IBC has a brand new site, as usual, though we’ve linked our previous conference sites through the tab up top marked as “Archives.” However, we’re quite proud of the new look and feel with this year’s site, so please do take a moment to look around and get comfortable as we’ll be updating frequently.

As for this blog, we’re pleased to let you know that you won’t be hearing from us directly. Mostly because we’ll be hard at work nailing down final details in the weeks leading up to the conference, but also because we thought it would be pretty boring since we designed the entirety of this website. Instead, we thought it would be far more interesting to let attendees, alumni and students speak for themselves. In the coming weeks we’ll be updating this space with guest blogs and interviews from past and present participants so you can get a glimpse of both IBC and the University of Michigan community.

Thanks for reading, and stay tuned!
